Chiang Mai is located in the northwest of Thailand. We highlight the best things to do in & around Chiang Mai: 10. Eat the traditional dish Khao Soi This creamy yellow curry noodle soup comes with a choice of chicken or beef, and you can find it in nearly any restaurant in the Chiang Mai. 9. Tour the Buddhist Temples of the old town There are over 300 Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai and many of them are located inside the historic old town, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Chedi Luang. 8. Visit an elephant sanctuary We visited Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai, a sanctuary that is committed to education and rehabilitation of elephants that have been abused by the tourism industry. ☑️ Elephant Nature Park: 🤍 7. Join a cooking class We joined a half-day cooking class, during which we prepared 3 different dishes; a Thai soup, a curry, and Pad Thai. For each dish, there were different options to choose from for your proteins and flavors. ☑️ Chiang Mai cooking class we joined: 🤍 6. Cruise down the Mae Ping River The Mae Ping River is the main river running through Chiang Mai and offers a quick escape from the city. You can rent a kayak and cruise down yourself or join a 2 hour boat tour that takes you past beautiful scenery around Chiang Mai. ☑️ Mae Ping River Cruise: 🤍 5. Day tour to Doi Inthanon National Park Home to Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon National Park is about a 1.5 hour drive from the city. The park is filled with beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails, viewpoints, and twin pagodas near the summit. ☑️ Doi Inthanon Day Tour from Chiang Mai: 🤍 4. Shop at the local Talat Warorot This historic market opened in the early 20th century and is a great place to buy clothes, souvenirs, local food and spices. Open daily from 6am to 7pm. 3. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep The sacred Doi Suthep temple is about 15 km or 9 miles outside of Chiang Mai. The temple also offers beautiful views of the city and the surrounding area. 2. Drive the Samoeng loop This 100km or 62 miles route is a pretty easy ride with spectacular views winding through the Mae Sa Valley and the Samoeng Forest. We recommend making a few stops along the way: the Mae Sa waterfalls, botanical gardens, and the Samoeng viewpoint. 1. Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market The largest market in Chiang Mai is the Sunday Night Market. Starting from the Tha Pae Gate, the market runs along the entire length of the Ratchadamnoen Road from 5pm until around 10.30pm. The Sunday Weekend Walking Street is the most popular shopping in Chiang Mai. This walking street is a night bazar and takes place in the old city only on Sunday starting at 4pm. It is approximately 1.5 km long. It starts at the Tha Pae Gate and ends at Wat Phra Singh. A great place for shopping, buying gifts and food. It starts from 4pm so go early as it gets really busy. Lots and lots of market stalls which all seemed quite reasonably priced. Great choice of food stalls too. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Chiang Mai on a Sunday. The quickest way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai Thailand is to take one of the dozens of daily flights that can cost as little as $30 (1,100THB) but is it the BEST way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? We decided to book a first class private cabin on train number 13 to find out if taking the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok Thailand's new Bang Sue Grand Station to Chiang Mai is still worth it in 2023. Which overnight train is best from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? The newest sleeper train is "Number 9" which departs Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 18:40. The first class cabins on train number 9 look beautiful, but unfortunately it was fully booked when we were travelling so we booked train "Number 13" which departs at 20:05 How long is the journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? The train left promptly at 20:05 and arrived in Chiang Mai around 08:45. Sometimes there can be delays but it should take less than 13 hours in total. We've been to Thailand a few times before, but it's our first time visiting Chiang Mai. Located in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a laid-back modern city that still has a lot of historical and cultural sites plus tons of delicious food. 🍜 Our lunch spot doesn't have an English name but you can find it here: ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเสวย โจ๊กโตเกียว 🤍 There are 2 stalls right next to each other, the one in this video is the end/further stall but both spots are great. We have also filmed rhe stall right next to this one in our Chiang Rai video. 🛌 Our Chiang Mai accommodation is located in Astra Condo 🤍 You can find listings on Airbnb as there are multiple apartments and it's a popular stay for both foreigners and locals alike although note that Airbnbs are a legal grey area in Thailand. Catching a Grab or tuk tuk from this accommodation is very easy tho and there are plenty of great places to eat nearby which are in walking distance including a night bazaar. 🛕 Temples visited Wat Phan Tao & Wat Chedi Luang are very close to one another inside Chiang Mai Old City.
